A very long time ago, in a small little city, there was a man. This man was definitely anything but normal. His name was Davey and he lived in the absolute smallest city on Earth. He lived in a little pink plaid house where he grew up. He hasn’t moved out of the house since he was a boy. He grew up with his mother, after his father abandoned him. He was homeschooled, where he learned many things and was incredibly smart, but he had absolutely no social life at all. Because of his father being gone, he developed an attention disorder and was always thriving for attention. After getting this disorder, he had a fear come across him. He was afraid of the Earth. Everything on Earth. Even if it was people, besides his mother of course, the outdoors, sunlight, and basically everything else. He only ate pizza, because that was the only thing his mother knew how to make for him when he was young. Pizza was like friends to him, it was always there when he needed it.
Davey was eligible for an amazing scholarship, but didn’t accept it. He didn’t want to go to the school, not just because it wasn’t the best school, but because he didn’t want to leave his house or go outside.
”Am I able to take the courses I want to take online?” Davey asked his mother.
“No Davey. That isn’t possible. You either go to college and get an education, or you stay home and be afraid of the Earth. When there is clearly nothing to be afraid of,” she said, even though he could.
Davey hung up after that and hadn’t talked to his mother since. It has been five years since then, making Davey 23 years old.
As Davey grew older, his fear became worse. The memories of him being around people and being outside gradually disappeared. Before he knew it, he couldn’t even remember what the outside looked like. His windows were all boarded up and soon enough, the only light he knew of came from the little lamps filling empty spots in his house. His knowledge also disappeared with his memories. Once his mother left the house, because she was so fed up with his actions and fear, he stopped learning things. His mother was the only one that knew everything, and she was the only one that he trusted to teach him anything. He gave up on school, his social life, and everything else because of his fear.
One day, Davey decided that he was exasperated with himself. He turned on the television and the news was on. Pictures were shown of the Earth and good parts about it. He suddenly became very interested in it. He realized how insane he became after 20 years, so he developed a dream to overcome his fear. But, he then blinked his eyes a few times and woke up from his daydreaming. He still liked his dream, and he wanted to go for it. Like they say, dreams do come true. He decided to follow his actual dream. He wants to get over his fear more than anything because it is time to move on. Davey realized that he is too old to keep up a fear that happened to him when he was 3. That is why he needed to stop being immature and move on with his life. His dream inspired him so much that he wanted to go for it.
Because Davey hasn’t been out of the house for awhile, he’s not used to being in contact with other people. Or even being in contact with the street. He doesn’t know when the best time to go out is, so he calls his mother.
“Hello,” someone answers on the last ring.
“Mom?” Davey replies.
“Oh gosh Davey. Where have you been? I haven’t talked to you in forever! Have you been outside lately? The weather is getting real nice. I can’t wait for summer. Did you ever go take those college classes?”
Davey’s mother was filled with questions, but Davey had no answers for her. He couldn’t tell her that he still hasn’t left the house since he was a boy. But, Davey had to ask her some questions about being outside and he would have to confide in her anyways. All he did was hope that she wouldn’t get mad.
“Mom, I wish I had answers for you. All I can say is that I need help going outside. I want to know the best time to get over my fear, but I don’t know when that is. All I remember is that going out in the evening is worse than going out in the day.”
“Davey! You need to grow up! It is humanly impossible for someone not to be outside.”
“I guess it isn’t. I made it possible. Listen mom, I really need your help. I want to be normal again, but I want to do it without seeing a doctor or something.”
“I guess I can do a little. Since you said that the evening is worse than going out in the day, the best way to get over your fear is to go out in the evening. That way, when you go out in the evening, after being out in the day, you will think it is nothing.”
Davey’s mother always had the best advice. Well actually, she was the only person that Davey ever asked any advice from, because she was the only person that he knew. So I guess to him, she would be the best advice person.
“Is that allowed?” Davey asked, hoping it wasn’t.
“What do you mean is that allowed?” she replied.
“Is it allowed…Going out in the evening, I mean.” he restated his question.
“Of course it’s allowed! Why would you even ask that!?” she screamed.
Davey knew she was getting fed up with all of his stupid questions, so he didn’t ask anymore. He quickly said that he had to go, even though he knew she wouldn’t buy that. He never did anything, so why would he have to go? Before she could even ask why he had to go, he hung up. He needed more advice, but didn’t know who to take it from.
He quickly looked around his house for an old phone book, or old phone numbers. He wanted to call his father, so he could get advice from him. He only found one man with the same last name as his own. He figured that it had to be him. No one else could have the same last name as him, but his family. Davey was obviously not as smart as he used to be. He read the phone number as he dialed it, making sure he hit every button he was supposed to. He heard one ring, then the next, and then the next. Someone finally answered.
“Hello?” a deep, manly voice replied.
“Hi,” Davey answered.
“Uh…Who is this?” the deep voice said.
“Davey.”
“Do I know you?”
Davey got scared and hung up. He gathered up enough courage to try again a few hours later.
“Hello?” the exact same voice replied as before.
“Hi, this is Davey again.”
“Is this some kind of prank call?”
“What’s a prank call?”
“Oh my gosh, do I know you!?”
“I hope so. Were you ever married before?”
“Yes.”
“To whom?”
“Does it matter?”
“Do you have any kids?”
“I had one.”
“Male or Female?”
“Is this a survey thing?! ‘Cause if it is, I’m not interested.”
“No. This is Davey.”
“Ok Davey, what do you want from me?”
“Are you my father?”
The man on the other end hung up. Davey was furious. He had never been so mad at anyone before. He called a few hours later, once again.
“Hello,” answered the same man.
“This is Davey again.” he replied.
“Davey, you need to stop calling me. I don’t know you.”
“Yes you do.”
“No I don’t.”
“Ok. Can I just ask you a few personal questions?”
“Will you leave me alone afterwards?”
“Depends, but most likely, yes.”
“Ok, what do you want?”
“Who were you married to before?”
“Brenda Walsthoughts.”
“Great…Have you ever had any kids before?”
“Yes. A boy.”
“Did you ever leave him?”
“When he was four.”
“I was three.”
“What?” The man sounded a bit confused.
“Never mind that…Why did you leave him?” Davey answered back quickly.
Davey felt like he was getting this social contact thing down, but I guess he didn’t realize that you probably shouldn’t ask people such personal questions. No one ever knows why the man even responds with the truth to these.
“Because I met someone else.”
“Well that’s just rude. I have to go now. Goodbye.”
“Who are you to tell me what I do right and wrong? It was about twenty years ago. We need to move on from the past and live in the present.”
“You were living in the present, until you thought you had a better future.”
There was a long hesitation before the man on the other end answered back.
“None of this even makes sense. Can you please tell me who you are?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I already told you.”
“No you didn’t.”
“I’m Davey.”
“Do you have a longer name than that?”
“Yes.”
“Can you tell me?”
“No.”
“Well, I guess I’m going to be done talking to you then.”
“Bye Dad!”
Davey immediately hung up the phone after the last statement he made. The man on the other end was so confused. It was almost like he understood what Davey had meant the whole entire time, but never put everything together. Davey didn’t let the conversation get to him. He hurried out the door with not a thought in his mind. He didn’t know where he was going. As soon as he walked outside, he could feel the sun beating down on him. Sweat was dripping from his forehead. He was not used to this weather. His house has always been kept at 60 degrees, perfect weather to Davey. He didn’t sweat, and he was never too cold. Going outside in 70 degree weather was really intense to him. Of course, he knew this was normal because he remembered it from when he was homeschooled. He tried not to let it bother him, but it still did. He ran back inside and went to his bedroom. He checked if he had any lighter clothes to put on. He finally found a pair of shorts from about 5 years ago (his mother given them to him for a birthday present). Luckily, they fit. Then he found a light undershirt. He put them on and trotted outside.
After changing, he had felt a lot better. The sun didn’t bother him after that, but he knew he was going to be out late. He went back inside to grab a bag filled with things he might need. He put in a sweater, a flashlight, a water bottle, and some money. He put the bag on his shoulder and went back outside. It was 3:00 PM and he was finally ready to leave. He still wasn’t completely sure where he was going, so he just followed his instincts and took whatever turn came to mind. He had been walking for a little while, when some kids walked out from around the corner.
“I like your murse!” a few kids laughed.
Davey didn’t understand, so he just kept walking, keeping a big smile. He thought that it was a compliment, even though he didn’t know what a ‘murse’ was.
Davey was getting hungry. He went to a place that made pizzas. He walked in and went right back to the kitchen. He started looking for dough, when the owner came in and screamed at him to get out of the kitchen. Davey still didn’t understand.
“What do you mean ‘Get out of the kitchen!’ I am making a pizza,” he said.
“This is a restaurant,” the owner said. “We make the food here”.
“Well, how dandy! How do you know what I want?” Davey said.
“You tell us,” replied the owner.
“Well, ok! I want a pizza,” Davey said.
“Great...”
They were a little annoyed by Davey, so they just gave him a medium pizza and told him they wanted 5 dollars for it. Davey gave it to them and got up from his seat.
“It is so nice of you to make pizza for me,” he said with a smile. “I’ve never tasted anything better!”
That was the truth though. Davey had never ever tasted anything better than pizza, because he had never eaten anything besides pizza.
“Glad you enjoyed it,” a worker said.
“I just have one question,” Davey said. “What’s a murse?”
“A man purse. You should probably go. It’s getting late,” the same worker said.
Davey still didn’t understand the whole murse thing, but he still didn’t let that get to him. He was on a mission. Davey liked being outside and he liked people. He had definitely reached his goal of not being afraid of the daytime, but now he was really looking forward to beating his fear of being afraid of the evening time. So far, he just loved life and he wasn’t going to let anyone or anything stop him.
It was about 7:00 PM and Davey realized it was getting dark. He decided to go to a phone in a box and call his mother. He didn’t understand why there was a phone in a glass box, but it was there and it said ‘PUBLIC’ on it, so he decided that it would be ok to use. After eating at the pizza place, he realized he only had $15.00 left. He didn’t know how either the 10 or the 5 was going to fit in the small slot where it said to put your money in. Lucky for him, he found a quarter on the ground and put it in the slot. It fit perfectly. Davey was amazed. He dialed his mother’s number.
“Hello,” his mother answered.
“Hi mom, it’s Davey again.” he replied.
“Hi Davey, do you need something?”
“Yes.”
“Well…What is it?”
“I need help.”
“With what?”
“Where should I go next?”
“Where are you?”
“In this glass box.”
“Ah, you’re at a pay phone. You can only use quarters there, remember that, but you can use it whenever.”
“I get it now! By the way mom, what is a murse?”
“A man purse.”
“I don’t understand. Oh well.”
“Ok, well where are you going next? It’s getting dark. Do you remember your way back home? How was it so far?”
“Slow down with all the questions mother. I don’t know where to go next, and no I do not remember my way back home, but I bet I will remember once I go back down some streets. And I love it so far! It is so entertaining. I have never seen so many people before in my life!”
“I believe you…If you get lost, go to another one of these phones. Do you have any more quarters?”
“No, I don’t.”
“Find a restaurant or something and ask for quarters. They might ask you how many, just give them a 5 dollar bill. Do you have one of those?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Ok, great. Call me later.”
“Bye mother.”
Davey hung up and walked the down the street. He could tell it was not 7:00 anymore. He wandered down the street and ended up in an alley. There were people everywhere. His best friend, aka his mother, once told him this is what a hood looked like, but Davey doesn’t believe in stereotypical things. His mother obviously does though. It was loud down this alley, Davey didn’t like it. He was getting more and more afraid of the evening time. He was thinking about just going out in the day. It would be healthy for him to get a walk in every now and then and eat a restaurant and meet new people, but going out in the evening just wasn’t going to be his thing. But he couldn’t resist walking, he wanted to be normal and get over his fear. He wanted to get married and have friends. He wanted to go back to school. He wanted to meet his father. None of that was ever going to happen if he didn’t go outside in the evening. He was day dreaming and walking at the same time, when a man opened his house door. The door hit him in the head and down went Davey.
The man apologized quickly and helped Davey back up. He was a little dizzy when he got back up, but his memory wasn’t gone. He recognized the address on the man’s door. It was as if he had seen it somewhere else. He was so confused. The man talking seemed like the man on the phone. That was it! Davey saw the address in the phone book. That meant that the man that just hit him on the head was his father, and he had just met him! Davey was more than excited.
“Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!” Davey kept repeating.
“Is there something you need?” His father answered back.
“It’s you! It’s you! I knew it. I just had to keep going. I needed to get over my fear. It’s you! I have achieved something. Can I come in!?” Davey rambled.
“Sure. It’s the least I could do.”
Davey walked into the house to see a giant television set, and a pizza cooking in the oven. It was definitely his father.
“You’re my dad.” Davey said.
“Oh, so that was you on the phone today.” his father answered.
“Yes, that was me. I know you’re my dad. You were married to Brenda, my mother.”
“Right.”
Davey’s father wasn’t as thrilled as Davey was, but after awhile of talking, he was more than happy about meeting his son. Davey was trying to learn as much about his father as possible, but his father didn’t want to speak up about anything.
“David,” his father was interrupted.
“They call me Davey.”
“Ok, Davey…It’s getting late, you should probably get home. Would you like me to drive you?”
“I’ve never been in a car before.”
“Well, it’s not too late to start learning how to actually drive one. Come on over on Monday and I’ll teach you. Hey, what has your mom been up to? Not teaching you how to drive a car obviously, but how’s life going for her?”
“Drive a car!? Amazing! But, mom’s been good. She left me when I was 15 because I had this embarrassing disorder thing, it’s complicated, but yeah. I haven’t seen her since then, I only talk to her on the phone and stuff.”
“Disorder? Oh your fear, she told me about that when you were 13. I remember now. That was the last time I talked to her. Boy that was like 10 years ago. I always used to call just to check up on you, but that was the only time anyone ever answered.”
“Mother said you abandoned me when I was three and didn’t want anything to do with me. I would really like to catch up now.”
“Well, you don’t say…How about you come on over every day for awhile. Listen, I’ll pick you up around 10:30 in the morning on the weekdays. I’ll show you what you have been missing out on. Life will be better for you.”
“That would be amazing! Call me on my home phone! I’m sure you have it, after today.”
“Yes, I do son…That was strange. I understand it all now, but here, get in the car and I’ll drive you home.”
Just as he was ordered to do, Davey got in the car. His first time in the car was a little weird for him. He hit almost every single button, but didn’t do too much damage to the car. He found it interesting that you could just sit in here while the car rolled down hills and through streets. Davey was amazed. Life was all working out for him now.
Davey got home and checked the time. It was already 1:30 in the morning. Davey was extremely proud of himself. He went from being frightened to courageous in just 24 hours. He felt accomplished and he couldn’t wait for tomorrow. He went to bed right away, knowing that his life was just 8 hours away from almost being complete. The next day, his father picked him up at 10:30, just like he said he would, and they went to breakfast. Davey looked at the menu and didn’t know there was such a variety of things to choose from. He loved the Earth now, and he knew he was going to love it forever.
Davey went to his dad’s house everyday for 4 straight years. He got his knowledge back and he learned how to drive a car, just like his dad had promised. He liked his father. He didn’t know how much he missed out on when he was locked up inside. He liked being normal. He even took the boards off of his windows and restocked his fridge with a variety of foods. One day, his father told him that he should go to college so he could get a good job. Davey liked the idea, so he agreed. He started college and loved it right away. Davey met a bunch of new friends, and his social life was getting so much better. Davey was loving life, until his mother called him.
“Hello, this is David,” he answered.
“Davey?” His mother replied.
“Mom? I go by David now.”
“I haven’t talked to you in years. How have you been? I heard things were going well for you!”
“Well mom, I couldn’t have done it without you. Well technically I could this whole time…”
“David, what are you talking about?”
“You kept my dad from me. I’ve been working with him a lot. He taught me how to drive and he even got me into college.”
“Davey, you have to believe me. He’s not a good person. He will leave you soon.”
“No he won’t mom, he’s staying here.”
Davey hung up the phone right away. He didn’t like that his mother was trying to talk him out of hanging out with his father. Davey liked his dad and he wasn’t going to let one comment get to him. He stood up for himself, even though it seemed like he was being laughed at by his mother. She thought he was an idiot for trusting his father, but she couldn’t do anything to change it. She made it easy on Davey, and didn’t call him back.
A few years passed and Davey had a good future ahead of him. He was married and he even wrote a book. If Davey had never intended to go out and chase his dream, he wouldn’t have ever met his father. Without his father, he wouldn’t have a good life, like he does now. He hasn’t talked to his mother since she lied to him about his father, but Davey still liked his mother. He just didn’t want anything to do with her anymore. His life was good now, and he wasn’t going to let anyone stop him from living it.
The End
